Growing Strong at the Siskiyou Family YMCA
On February 26th 2011, residents from Yreka, California and area towns gathered together at the Siskiyou Family YMCA for the grand opening of the Craig Hill Activity Center.
Siskiyou Family YMCA Executive Director, Scott Eastman, expressed that this facility has since strengthened the community. “If we don’t look at preventative measures we’re in trouble and that’s what has driven us, is the opportunity to provide a place for families to exercise together,” he said.
The combined efforts of the community and a serendipitous turn of events led to a $600,000 facility that gives children and their families the opportunity to exercise in group activities or on their own. Additionally, it has been a sound investment for the YMCA. Eastman stated, “Overall within our organization over the last 12 months with the momentum we’ve had a 15% membership increase.”
The structure, which was originally designed as a fitness and recreational center for their gymnastics program, was redesigned to include a mezzanine level. With the addition of the mezzanine level, the structure transformed into an activity center that included an upstairs complete with a group exercise area for wrestling and gymnastics. Downstairs houses training equipment and a rock climbing wall. Allied Steel Buildings President, Michael Lassner, is proud to be associated with the project. He noted that, “the community of Siskiyou County is trying to turn the statistics around and decrease obesity rates for children in the area. They are providing a place for families to improve their quality of life and that is a worthy endeavor.”
