PROJECT OVERVIEW

Velocity Climbing Recreational Steel Building

Project Details

Recreational Steel Building. Reaching New Heights, A State-of-the-Art Indoor Rock Climbing Facility in Miami, FL

In a region where indoor climbing options were scarce and ventilation issues prevailed, our client embarked on a mission to create the ultimate climbing facility, driven by his passion for rock climbing. His commitment to resolving climbing facility ventilation challenges, particularly the degradation caused by climbing chalk, led him to envision a cost-effective structure with high-performance air handlers.

While his initial architectural plan proposed a structural steel building, the quest for a more budget-friendly alternative brought the client to Allied Steel Buildings.

Collaboration and Innovation

Working within the confines of a compact residential lot, Allied collaborated closely with the client’s architect to craft a structure that accommodated the desired climbing wall heights and maximized use of the lot. Space constraints limited the width of the structure, so the design accounted for this with tapered columns that freed up floorspace but broadened at the top to meet the structure’s load requirements.

Global Coordination for Unique Challenges

Design discussions commenced in October 2022 and involved extensive coordination with Walltopia, the climbing wall manufacturer. Overcoming the intricacies of load-bearing attachments between the climbing walls and the building introduced complexity to the design and engineering process. With Walltopia based in Bulgaria, Allied worked around the clock to transcend time zone differences and both teams harnessed 3D models to streamline the design development.

Seamless Progress and Firsts

Fabrication kicked off in June 2023, with deliveries starting in August. Despite our lack of prior experience in designing climbing facilities, Allied can proudly say we encountered no significant obstacles throughout the project. Installation has been proceeding smoothly, with sheeting now completed and Walltopia’s rock climbing equipment scheduled to arrive next month. The completed building will showcase primary steel from our facility in La Coruna, Spain, featuring a pristine white finish coat applied in-house, along with a standing seam roof and a vibrant array of PBR wall panels.
